Horsemanship for Polocrosse

Specialised clinics designed to build more confident, responsive horses for the unique demands of the sport — delivered by a state-level polocrosse player with decades of horsemanship experience.

The challenge: What the sport demands of your horse

Polocrosse asks more of a horse than most sports. Operating at pace, in close contact with other horses, responding to one-handed riding and the unpredictable movement of a game — it's a high-stimulus environment that not every horse handles naturally.

Most coaching in polocrosse focuses on the player. The horsemanship side — preparing the horse mentally and physically for what the sport demands — often gets overlooked. The result is horses that are tense, unpredictable or inconsistent under match conditions, and riders spending more energy managing their horse than playing the game.

A horse that isn't genuinely prepared for the environment becomes a limiting factor at every level of the sport.

The Horsemanship for Polocrosse Clinic

Work Ready Horsemanship's Horsemanship for Polocrosse clinic is specifically designed to address that gap. Working from the ground up, the program focuses on building the confidence, responsiveness and focus horses need to operate well in a fast-paced, high-stimulus environment.

The clinic takes a horse-centred approach — developing the horse's ability to work calmly and responsively in conditions that mirror the demands of the sport. This complements the player coaching most clubs already provide, adding the horsemanship foundation that makes everything else work better.

What the clinic covers:

  • Mental and physical preparation for high-stimulus environments

  • Building responsiveness and focus under pressure

  • One-handed riding fundamentals and horse responsiveness

  • Managing horse behaviour in close proximity to other horses

  • Pre-ride assessment and readiness checks specific to match conditions

  • Escalation management — recognising and responding to resistance before it becomes a problem

Suitable for all levels — from horses and riders just starting out in the sport through to experienced combinations looking to iron out specific issues.

Who the clinic suits

The Horsemanship for Polocrosse clinic is suited to:

  • Individual players looking to improve their horse's performance and responsiveness

  • Polocrosse clubs wanting to run a clinic for members across all grades

  • Junior riders and coaches building good horsemanship habits from the start

  • Experienced combinations working through specific behavioural or performance issues

  • New horses being introduced to the sport and needing a solid preparation foundation

Clinics can be structured to suit your club's format — whether that's a single day session, a weekend clinic or an ongoing program across a season.
